For the second time this week, a national medical organization changed health screening recommendations for women. Friday, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists said women don't need pap tests to look for cervical cancer as often as they've been getting them.

New unemployment numbers released Friday show that North Carolina's jobless rate is up to 11 percent in October from 10.8 percent in September. It may seem like a small increase, but it's still tough for those who have spent much of this year in the unemployment line.

North Carolina's unemployment rate increased to 11 percent last month. That number is up from 10.8 percent in September. October marked the ninth straight month of double digit unemployment in the state.

Thursday was a special day at the North Carolina Children's Hospital. Hospital officials held the annual Children's Promise fundraising celebration to raise money to help very sick children from all across the state.

Authorities have charged Mario McNeill with the rape and murder of 5-year-old Shaniya Davis in addition to earlier charges of kidnapping. The girl went missing from her mother’s home in Cumberland County Nov. 10.

North Carolina Senate Democrats have a new majority leader. The caucus appointed Sen. Martin Nesbitt Tuesday morning to replace Sen. Tony Rand, who is leaving to head the parole board. There were no other candidates.

The season is over for the Terry Sanford High School football team. A judge has ruled the team is ineligible to continue in the state playoffs. The ruling means New Hanover High School will now get a bye next round in the playoffs.

Hundreds of people came together in Fayetteville Monday to show support for 5-year-old Shaniya Davis and her family. More than 300 people turned out for the emotional candlelight vigil, including her father.

A judge has not ruled whether Terry Sanford High School can continue to participate in the rest of the state high school football playoffs. Last week, the school was forced to forfeit all of its regular season games because of an ineligible player.
